Witham's CM8 postcode reaches out from the town centre into a scatter of villages that each keep their own character. Wickham Bishops and Hatfield Peverel are two of them, and both are where we've recently designed complete bathrooms: a master ensuite built out from an old cottage wall, and a cloakroom with more personality than most whole bathrooms manage. The town itself mixes everything you'd expect from an Essex market town — older terraces close to the centre, semis and estates built up through the mid-century, and newer family homes on the edges. No two Witham bathrooms start from the same building, so no two designs should either.
The Wickham Bishops ensuite is a good example of what an older building can hide. Behind the plaster of what looked like an ordinary stud wall was an oak-framed cottage: beams, uneven joists, the lot. The floor had to come up before anything could go in, and the design only worked once we knew what we were building against. It's the kind of thing you can't spec from a brochure measurement alone, which is why we ask for proper room details, or send someone to measure for you, before a single tile gets drawn.
Hatfield Peverel, a few miles the other side of Witham, gave us the opposite brief: a small cloakroom asked to do a lot of visual work. Navy Calypso furniture, jungle wallpaper, brushed brass from JTP — proof that a downstairs loo doesn't have to play it safe just because it's small.

Wickham Bishops, CM8 · Master ensuite · Wall moved into the bedroom · 2025
The old ensuite in this Wickham Bishops CM8 home was too tight to be worth refitting as it stood, so the design started by moving the long wall out into the bedroom and hanging a new door. Behind the plaster was an oak-framed cottage — beams, uneven joists, the lot — which meant the floor came up before anything went in.
The extra width bought a proper shower enclosure with a brushed brass frame, a full run of Calypso Chiltern navy fitted furniture, and a wall-hung vanity with room either side of it. Brassware is JTP throughout, and large-format marble-effect porcelain from Ca' Pietra runs floor to ceiling. Products came to £10,000–£12,000, and the room took three weeks to fit once the wall had moved.
