Bowman Bathrooms is an independently-owned design and supply company for bathrooms, founded in 2022 by Jonathon Barclay. We design and supply complete rooms for homes across Colchester, CO1 to CO7, from a compact cloakroom to a full master ensuite. Our nearest showroom is at Units 26-27 Block B, Braintree Enterprise Centre, 46-48 Springwood Dr, Braintree CM7 2YN, around 19 miles from central Colchester. A note from the studio · 20 August 2026

Colchester calls itself Britain's oldest recorded town, and it has been a city since 2022. Its houses span almost every century in between. Step out from the Castle and you pass Tudor-era houses in the Dutch Quarter, Victorian villas in Lexden, rows of post-war semis, and the newer family estates at Highwoods and Stanway. No two Colchester bathrooms start from the same place, so no two designs should either.

The older the house, the more the small details matter. Period homes near the Castle and in the Dutch Quarter rarely offer a flat wall or a square corner, and the floor void is often too shallow for a concealed cistern frame without a little building work first. So we ask you for the sizes of your room and a few photos, and if measuring is not something you fancy taking on, our measuring service can do it for you. Either way, the 3D design you approve is the room you get.

Lexden's Victorian villas bring generous rooms and high ceilings, which is a gift. The catch is pipework that has been altered many times over since the house went up. Tell us what you know about yours and we will plan the new layout around it, so your fitter is never left improvising on the day.

Wivenhoe and Dedham are different again. Quayside homes and listed village houses both reward restraint: products that sit quietly in the room, finishes that suit the building, and any listed-building conditions checked before a single item is ordered.

Out at Highwoods, Mile End and Stanway the houses are newer and the walls are more forgiving. The question there is rarely structural. It's how to turn a builder's standard bathroom into a room the family is proud of: better lighting, a proper feature wall, storage that actually fits.

We don't have a showroom in Colchester, so the design work happens in Braintree, about 19 miles up the road. A phone call is enough to get things moving, or come over for a coffee and talk it through in front of the displays. And when you want to see the tiles and the brassware in real life, we think the trip is well worth it.

A full bathroom in a Colchester home usually lands between £6,000 and £15,000 in products, and climbs when the room or the specification does. Fitting is priced separately by whoever builds the room, your own fitter or one from our Approved Fitter Network, and we'll give you an honest idea of that figure while the design is being drawn.

How It Works

From First Conversation to Finished Room

Most people come to us with a picture in their head and a room that does not match it yet. Talking it through is the way in. Come to Braintree, 19 miles up the road, and see the real products, or simply get in touch and describe the room to us. We will need its dimensions before anything can be drawn. You can take them yourself, or leave that to our measuring service. Then your bathroom goes into 3D, with a fixed price across the full specification. The design service is included, and not one item is ordered until you have approved it. When you do, every product is ordered and the deliveries coordinated so they arrive in step. Whoever is fitting it, your own tradesperson or someone recommended from our Approved Fitter Network, gets a complete technical pack: installation drawings, clearances and product data. A designer stays reachable all the way through the build, and your warranties are registered once the room is done.

Lydia and Harry had designs drawn up by four companies before choosing Bowmans for their West Mersea ensuite. The brief was dark and spa-like: Ca' Pietra Magnifique Nero bookmatched tiles, a BC Designs Crea freestanding bath with JTP brushed bronze brassware, his-and-hers showers, and a Porcelanosa Boulder pebble bench warmed by underfloor heating, all lit from above by a new skylight.

Products came to £25,000–£30,000, well above the £6,000–£15,000+ range a typical full bathroom sits in.
