Bowman Bathrooms is an independently-owned bathroom design and supply company, founded in 2022 by Jonathon Barclay. We design, specify and supply every product in your bathroom, then support your own fitter or one from our Approved Fitter Network through the build. Leigh-on-Sea is a town of short walks and very different houses. Start by the cockle sheds in Old Leigh and the cottages are small and old, with walls that were never straight and floors that sit close to the ground. Climb the hill to the Broadway and the streets fill with Edwardian and inter-war family homes. Carry on east into Chalkwell and the villas grow taller, with bathrooms that were often carved out of a bedroom decades after the house was built. Leigh sits within the City of Southend-on-Sea, but it has never felt like a suburb, and its houses don't behave like one either.
That variety is the whole job. In an Old Leigh cottage the questions are space and access: how a bath gets up a narrow stair, where a concealed cistern can go when the wall behind the toilet is solid brick, whether a wetroom floor is a kinder answer than an enclosure. On the Marine Estate and around Chalkwell the rooms are bigger, but the pipework has often been moved two or three times, so the more you can tell us about your room, the closer the first design lands.
Belfairs is where the inter-war semi takes over, and it's the kind of house we see again and again around here. The bathroom is usually at the back, over the kitchen, sized for a pedestal basin and a bath with a curtain. Most of what we design there is about getting a proper walk-in shower into that footprint without the room feeling smaller than it did before.
Then there's the air. Homes near the estuary live with salt and damp all year, and it tells on cheaper finishes first. We specify brassware and fixings that cope with it, and we plan ventilation into the design rather than leaving it to the last day of the build.
Our showroom is on London Road, so the first conversation usually happens there, standing next to the tiles and taps you're thinking about. After that, all we need are the measurements of your room. Send them over whenever you're ready, or ask us about the measuring service if you would rather not do it yourself, and we'll draw the room in 3D from there.

Products for a full bathroom in a Leigh-on-Sea home usually come to between £6,000 and £15,000, and can go beyond that for a large Chalkwell or Marine Estate room or a whole-house scheme. Every product is price-checked against the major online retailers, so there's no premium for buying through Bowmans. What you get on top is the design, the coordination and a designer who picks up the phone.
Installation is quoted by whoever fits the room. If installation goes through our Approved Fitter Network, we can give you an indication of that cost during the design stage; if you're using your own fitter, they'll price it from our drawings.

Walk in, or ring us. Both work. The showroom is on London Road, and most people do begin here, with a real tile in their hand and the showers running, though a phone call is every bit as good a starting point. Then the sizes. Yours, taken with a tape measure and sent over, or a measuring service if you would rather not. The 3D drawing comes next, with a fixed price sitting against every line of the specification. You only pay for the products you choose. You pay for the products, and nothing leaves a supplier until you have approved the drawing. After that we order and coordinate everything, from an Old Leigh cottage to a Belfairs semi. We are on hand for the whole build and register your manufacturer warranties at the end. The person fitting it, yours or one from our Approved Fitter Network, never has to guess at anything, because the technical pack covers the installation drawings, the clearances and the product data.

Billericay, CM11 · Master ensuite · New-build extension · 2025
Dawn's ensuite is part of a new extension, so we designed it from a blank canvas rather than around an old layout. A BC Designs Kurv bath sits under an Axor flood spout, twin JTP Hix rainfall showers run side by side with brushed-black controls, a Toto washlet takes the far corner, and Ca' Pietra Calacatta Maximus porcelain covers every surface from floor to ceiling.
Products came to £30,000–£35,000 — the top of what we do, and well above the £6,000–£15,000+ most full bathrooms land in — with ten brands in one room and four weeks on site once the fitter started. It's the furthest project from Leigh-on-Sea on this page, and the most ambitious, which is why it's here.
