Family Shower Room

This is the family shower room in a three-room project for the same Kelvedon home — the downstairs cloakroom and an ensuite were done at the same time. Here the old bath came out and the whole room was given over to showering.

A partition wall was built out from the window wall to the ceiling, roughly 380mm deep. It does three jobs at once: it forms one side of the shower, it holds two recessed niches lined in the patterned tile, and it carries a tiled bench that runs wall to wall at seat height with the shower tray starting at its base. All of it is tiled and mitred so there is no trim on show.

The back of the shower is a blue-and-white patterned porcelain, hand-painted in look and laid across the full height so the diamonds carry unbroken. The same tile runs across the floor of the room. Everything else — the surrounding walls, the bench, the partition — is a soft warm stone porcelain, which is what keeps the pattern from taking over.

Furniture is Calypso Pentland in Maritime Blue, with a traditional ceramic basin and a matching back-to-wall pan finished with a Maritime Blue seat. Brassware is JTP Grosvenor in brushed brass — a cross-head concealed thermostatic valve, a slide rail kit, and a ceiling-mounted 200mm overhead. The tray is a Tissino 1600×800 white slate, the screen a brushed brass Lakes profile with a bracing bar to the ceiling, and the WC runs off a Roper Rhodes concealed cistern.
