Wet Rooms That Don't Leak

Built on the German Wedi system — the quiet reason your wet room stays dry

Most bathroom leaks happen behind the tiles, not in front of them. Bowman Bathrooms builds wet rooms across Essex on the Wedi system — a fully sealed German waterproofing standard used by luxury bathroom designers across Europe. See finished projects, or visit our Braintree or Leigh-on-Sea showroom to see the system in person.

Bowman Bathrooms builds luxury wet rooms across Essex on the Wedi system. Wedi is a German waterproofing brand founded in 1983 in Emsdetten — the quiet, behind-the-tiles standard used by serious luxury bathroom designers because it doesn't leak. The pre-formed boards, shower trays and drainage channels go in as a single sealed system, not a patchwork of components. That's why a Wedi wet room still looks the same in 15 years as it did the day it was finished. See luxury wet rooms we've built, learn about our process, or book a free showroom visit.

Why your wet room won't leak

No leaks. No callbacks.

Wedi is one fully sealed waterproof system — not separate boards, membranes and tape from different suppliers. That's the leak point in most wet rooms; Wedi removes it.

Looks the same in 15 years

XPS foam core means no swelling, no mould growth, no soft spots behind the tiles. Wedi wet rooms installed in 2010 are still bone-dry today.

Designed by Bowmans, fitted by experts

Wedi is the specifier's standard for European luxury wet rooms. Our approved installers know the system; we coordinate the build start to finish.

What Wedi means for your bathroom

When you choose a wet room, the part you'll see is the tile, the shower head and the drain. The part you won't see — but the part that decides whether the room stays beautiful for the next 15 years — is the waterproof layer behind the tiles. That's what Wedi is.

Wedi was founded in 1983 in Emsdetten, Germany, and has been the quiet specifier's choice for European luxury wet rooms ever since. The system is built around a foam-cored building board with a waterproof skin: lightweight, dimensionally stable, mould-resistant. Bowmans specifies it on every wet room we design, and we coordinate the supply and installation through our approved installer network.

  • Walk-in showers with frameless glass and level-access entry
  • Full wet rooms — no tray, no shower screen, the whole floor as the shower
  • Master ensuites with hidden niches and bench seating
  • Family bathrooms where a wet zone needs to coexist with a freestanding bath

Tiles to pair with your Wedi wet room

Once the system is in, the visible finish is your tile. Most of our Essex Wedi wet rooms use large-format porcelain or natural stone — less grout, fewer joints, easier to clean.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most wet rooms that leak fail at the joints — where one waterproofing product meets another. The Wedi system is designed as one continuous sealed surface (board, drain, channel and seals from a single manufacturer), which is why it doesn't have those joint failure points. Bowman wet rooms built on Wedi over the past decade are still fully dry.

The waterproof system itself is engineered for the life of the building. Wedi was founded in 1983 and the boards are made from XPS foam with a waterproof skin — they don't swell, sag or grow mould the way plywood or plasterboard substrates can. The visible finish (tiles, grout, seals around the drain) is what's typically refreshed over time, not the structural waterproofing.

Most properties can take a wet room, but the answer depends on your floor structure (concrete vs joisted timber), the room's drainage routing, and the available headroom for falls. We assess this during your free design consultation. For joisted floors, Wedi's pre-formed shower elements with built-in falls usually solve the headroom problem that traditional wet rooms run into.

Adding a wet room to a bathroom design typically costs more than a standard shower enclosure — the Wedi tanking system, pre-formed tray element and labour for falls add roughly £1,500-£3,000 over a tray-and-screen install. The exact figure depends on room size, drainage routing and whether the floor needs structural prep. Use our Price Guide for room-specific budgeting.

A Wedi wet room install runs around 2-3 weeks for a typical Essex bathroom (longer if the floor needs structural work). The Wedi system is actually faster than traditional tanking because the boards arrive pre-cut and the shower element is one piece — less wet-trade time, less mess. We coordinate the schedule so you know when the room is out of action and when it's back.

The Wedi waterproofing system carries a manufacturer warranty (typically 10 years on the boards and elements). On installations completed by our approved installer network, we add a workmanship warranty on top. Bowmans handles registration, delivery and any product support after completion.
