AXOR Edge: precision, polished finishes and water

Geometry you notice from every angle

Designed by Jean-Marie Massaud, AXOR Edge is built around offset rectangular forms. The body, spout and handle don't sit within one simple block, so its outline changes as you move around the basin.

The broad, flat faces also reflect light in separate planes. On a polished finish, one face may appear bright while the surface beside it looks much darker. We'd treat Edge as a visible object within the room. But that doesn't mean the basin, mirror, tiles and furniture all need to be rectangular. Repeating the same shape everywhere can make the scheme look rigid, while a curved basin gives the tap a cleaner background and softens the overall arrangement.

How the sharp detail is made

AXOR uses diamond-tipped tools to create Edge's smooth polished faces, chamfered edges and finely milled decoration. The word diamond refers to the tooling, not stones set into the tap. What you notice is the contrast between an uninterrupted flat surface and the texture cut beside it. That manufacturing detail matters because the design relies on those edges and surface changes remaining clearly defined. See how AXOR describes the collection’s manufacture.

Three ways to change its character

The Chrome 190 mixer, code 46021000 gives bright, silvery reflections. It suits a scheme where you want the tap to feel crisp without introducing another strong colour.

The equivalent Polished Black Chrome 190, code 46021330 is much darker. Against a pale basin or worktop, that makes the outline and stepped geometry more obvious.

Polished Gold Optic is available on the 130 mixer, code 46011990. It adds warmth, particularly beside cream stone, warm timber or other brass-toned details. Gold Optic is a surface finish, not solid gold.

AXOR produces Chrome by electroplating and uses physical vapour deposition (PVD) to colour its metallic FinishPlus surfaces. PVD doesn't create Edge's milled texture. AXOR explains its surface processes here.

What the water does

On the AXOR Edge 130 diamond-cut mixer in Polished Gold Optic, NormalSpray is the basin tap's water pattern. AirPower adds air to the water, which AXOR says produces fuller, softer droplets. This isn't a selector that lets you switch between several spray modes. It changes how the single stream feels as it leaves the spout.

EcoSmart has a separate job. It limits this mixer's maximum flow to 5 litres per minute at 3 bar, while AirPower affects the character of the water. Those figures apply to this basin mixer and shouldn't be used to specify an Edge shower.

Carrying Edge through the bathroom

The floorstanding bath mixer shown within the Edge collection carries the same rectangular form to a taller, more sculptural scale. If you're using it beside a freestanding bath, we'd normally keep the nearby furniture and stone reasonably quiet so the outline remains clear.

A curved bath or basin can sit comfortably beside these straight fittings. In fact, the contrast often works better than forcing the same angular shape through every part of the room. Other Edge fittings can provide a modest link between the basin, bath and shower without making every visible detail compete for attention.

Choosing the version for your room

The 190 and 280 names are range designations rather than exact measurements: the 190 mixer has a 199mm spout height with a 175mm reach, while the 280 has a 282mm spout height but reaches only slightly further at 180mm. We’d choose between them by checking the basin rim, bowl position and tap hole rather than assuming the taller model also projects much further into the basin.

Mounting options

Edge is available in single-lever, three-hole and wall-mounted arrangements. The right choice depends on the basin, the space within the furniture and, for a wall-mounted model, the final face of the finished wall.

The final specification

Before ordering, confirm the exact finish and product code, then check the spout position against the basin with your fitter. The quotation should also identify any required parts, the product-specific water requirements and availability for your programme.
